Sunnybank Community & Sports Club Overview

History:

The Club was formed in 1967 by frustrated local parents because their son's were not getting a game of soccer each week for their local club. They formed a sports club called the Sunnybank District Junior Rugby Union with the culture that regardless of talent, each player that trained each week would get at least half a game on the weekend. This culture of giving everyone who participates a go is still maintained at the Club today.

The Sunnybank Community & Sports Club commenced as the Sunnybank Junior Rugby Club in 1967-68 with teams from Sunnybank High School participated in the QJRU competition.  The Club moved to its current location at Biggs field, named after the clubs founder and current patron, in 1974.

The Club joined the premier competition for senior teams in 1989. The football club has had a number of national representative players in the under age ranks. The Club's first Australian player was David Giffin in 1996 and he played in the Rugby World Cup that year.

Facility Development:

In early 1994 it became evident that for the Club to survive it would need to improve its facilities and expand its area of appeal to that of a community club which would encompass the many community, sporting and cultural groups within the Sunnybank area. The Club developed a master plan, in conjunction with Brisbane City Council, for the future development of the facility in conjunction with the Mimosa Creek Master Plan, which was being developed at the time.

Planning, gaining of approvals and finance took over five years to be completed with a further 12 months for construction. During the process the club also changed its trading name to The Sunnybank Community & Sports Club to further emphasise the importance of the club being a community club which is a lot more than a football club.

Community Involvement:

The club has over 24,000 members from the local community and we also have a number of local organisations directly involved here at the Club. These include, Sunnybank Senior Rugby Club, Sunnybank Junior Rugby Club, Cathay Association, MacGregor Cricket Club, MacGregor Netball Club, Sunnybank Brass Band, Southside Aquatics, Runcorn Swimming, Sunnybank Golf Club, Sunnybank Community Golf Club and Capri Car Club of Qld. The club also hosts Rugby Union, Rugby League, Touch and Cross Countries from a number of the schools in the local area.

In late 2006 the Sunnybank Community & Sports Club set up it's own Community Grants Program to benefit community organisations outside the of the sport of Rugby Union. To date this program has been working very well with its budget being increased each year since inception.
